Obedience is a necessary part of submission, but it’s not experienced the same by all submissives – or their Dominant partners.

- Constructive obedience involves behaviors that promote social harmony and the greater good of society
- Destructive obedience is the acceptance of requests from an authority that is immoral, illegal, or harmful in some way.
- Factors that impact obedience:
- Personality – conscientiousness and agreeableness linked to obedience
- Psychological distance from the effect of obedience – may be more likely to obey if it seems abstract or unconnected to you
- Ambiguity or lack of information – sometimes you’re more likely to obey if the other person seems to know more than you
- Fear of consequences
- Unquestioning obedience
- Obedience but with questions
