External (extrinsic) motivation is about doing something because of outside expectations – your partner set a task, you were asked to do something, etc. It might be something you know needs to be done, but you don’t have the internal motivation to just get it done. Some people feel guilt about that and others feel a sense of relief. So let’s talk about it in terms of power exchange relationships.
